If swelling occurs in the inner ear, deep sinuses or Eustachian tube, mucus or pus can become trapped there, causing a feeling of swollen, clogged, plugged, sore, congested ears, poor hearing, or even a feeling of water sloshing deep in the head. This solution can be done at home and relieves clogged ears and swelling so that the fluid can drain naturally.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A Neti pot
  • 4 Way (red) Nasal Spray
  • Saline solution
  • OR water and salt
  • A small towel
  • Kleenex tissues
  1. 1

Read the full instructions before you begin this clogged ear home remedy to familiarize yourself with the steps. If you have an ear infection, and this does not work, you need to finish your antibiotics then try this if still needed.

  2. 2
    NETI POT for clogged ears
    NETI POT for clogged ears

Buy a neti pot at the local drug store. Saline rinse is not required, warm tap water works fine. But you can buy saline packets or rinse to use, or make your own saline (salt water) if you prefer. Using saline or salt does reduce the sting of tap water, which can be a little harsh in the deep sinuses.

  3. 3
NASAL IRRIGATION to clean sinus swelling
NASAL IRRIGATION to clean sinus swelling

If you have never used a neti pot before, it is a good idea to practice simple nasal irrigation before proceeding. Follow the instructions that come with the neti pot or see link resources below for a link to video instructions.
Once you can easily clean your front nasal sinuses, you are ready to include your deep inner sinuses and can proceed.

  4. 4
MEDICATED SPRAY for clogged nose (and blocked ears!)
MEDICATED SPRAY for clogged nose (and blocked ears!)

Buy the nasal relief spray 4-way, in the red bottle, not just any brand will work. You can get this over the counter at the local grocery or drug store. The active ingredient should be phenylephrine. You can buy it by going here: http://www.amazon.com/4-Way-Nasal-Decongestant-Spray-Acting/dp/B000L1FODQ?&camp=212361&linkCode=wsw&tag=tcadycom-20&creative=380789

  5. 5

Fill the neti pot half full with warm water, or saline, and add a half tsp. of nasal spray into the neti pot. Place your finger over the end of the neti pot spout and shake gently to mix the solution.

  6. 6

Begin normal irrigation of sinuses by placing neti pot spout into nostril and tilting head to side and begin pouring the solution into the sinus. Allow some solution to come out of the discharge nostril as it normally would.

  7. 7
    PLUG NOSTRIL
    PLUG NOSTRIL

Stop the out-flow of solution by plugging your discharge nostril with your other hand.

  8. 8

Block the back of your throat with your tongue to keep solution from draining down your throat. This step is often the most difficult to perfect. Practice a few times if needed - with out nasal spray in the solution. There is a video to help you learn how to do this in the link resources at the bottom of this article.

  9. 9

Take a deep breath and hold it until step 15. Note that some people can learn how to take short quick breaths AND keep the solution in the sinuses while doing the remaining steps so it is possible. A small amount if solution may drain down the throat as a breath is taken so take care not to choke on it.

  10. 10

Keep your nostril and throat plugged, and begin to tilt your head up and back as if looking at the sky, and continue to pour solution into your nostril until it is full (overflowing). Then put the neti pot down and plug both nostrils or simply squeeze your nose shut as if swimming.

  11. 11

It may sound like you will be drowning yourself at this point, but you can be assured that if you are closing your throat correctly, you will not feel like you are drowning because no fluid is going down your throat. And if your ear is severely clogged, and you have hearing loss, at this point you will begin to feel solution getting to the precise location of the clog.

  12. 12

If you do not feel your ear opening now, then hold a little longer and release as stated below, and repeat the full instructions again. Some very bad clogs take 2-3 repeats to open all the way.

  13. 13

With your nostril and throat plugged to keep the solution in your sinuses, do the head tilting exercises. If at any point you need to breath or feel the ear unclog you can proceed to step 16.

  14. 14

Keeping your nose and throat plugged, tilt your head far forward as if to touch your nose to your knees. Next tilt your head far back so your chin points to the sky.

  15. 15

Next tilt your head to one side very far, as if you were going to try to make your ear touch your thigh, and then roll your torso forward, and around, to the other side so your other ear is facing the ground, and then go back again. If you have not felt the solution in your deep inner ear and can keep holding your breath, continue to repeat this maneuver in order to work the solution thru the winding tubes of the inner ear and back out again.

  16. 16

Now you will lean your head forward and over the sink and release your nose and allow the solution to drain out. And you may breath normally. You can tilt your head from side to side over the sink to help the solution come out of the deep sinuses if you feel it is still in there at any time.

  17. 17

Use your towel to wipe your face.

  18. 18

If your clogged fluid ear has not drained yet, just to help it along, do the valsalva maneuver to force any solution remaining deep into the inner ears and to help unclog the inner ear. You may repeat this step as often as needed. See link resources below for instructions.

  19. 19

Blow your nose forcefully several times. You may repeat this step as often as needed. Do not be surprised if a large amount of green or yellow mucus comes out at this point. This is the fluid build up that was in your ear. The fluid may also drain down your throat at a later time. You may notice or you may not.

  20. 20

If it did not drain yet, try chewing gum or forced yawning to trigger a drain.

Tips & Warnings

  • If it does not work the first time you can repeat again as often as 3-4 times a day.
  • If you can't seem to make it work and want to practice more, but not use too much medicated nasal spray, you can practice the deep inner ear irrigation exercises with out the medicated nasal spray in the solution.
  • This only works if the problem is inner ear congestion, not wax in the outer ear.
  • Watch videos on how to do it here: http://www.earadicator.com
  • Buy the 4 Way spray here: http://www.amazon.com/4-Way-Nasal-Decongestant-Spray-Acting/dp/B000L1FODQ?&camp=212361&linkCode=wsw&tag=tcadycom-20&creative=380789
  • If solution remains in your inner ear after performing this procedure you should redo the head tilting exercises until you drain the remaining liquid from the inner ear tubes fully.
  • I am not a Dr, just a clogged ear sufferer who discovered this solution that has now worked for many people. See testimonials on my web site. www.earadicator.com. Do it at your own risk though.
  • By trying this remedy you are agreeing to not hold me liable for any damages or harm.
  • If you have had earing problems all your life, non stop - this will not sure you. This is for occassional or sinus allergy and cold related clogged ears, and often works on clogged ears from flying too.

This is the only thing that has help clear the fluid in my ears. It was so bad that I was getting sick and dizzy. This had been going on for several years until I found this solution.
